Stresses Importance of “Staying The Course”


OTTAWA, ONTARIO. Today, Prime Minister Harper fulfilled the government’s commitment by presenting the latest report on the implementation of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“We are seeing the results of our plan working here at home in Halton,” said Lisa Raitt, Member of Parliament for Halton. “In just over 100 days, Canada’s Economic Action Plan is already protecting Canadians, stimulating our economy and creating jobs.”
The Third Report to Canadians entitled “Staying on Course” shows that 90 per cent of the stimulus funding for this fiscal year has now been committed to more than 7,500 infrastructure and housing projects. More than 4,000 of these projects have begun in the first six months of the 24-month plan. Ninety per cent of the funding for this fiscal year is now committed.  Canada’s Economic Action Plan is helping create or maintain an estimated 220,000 Canadian jobs by the end of 2010.

Lisa Raitt took this opportunity to highlight the Government’s investments to date in the Halton Region, including:
  • $8,114,920.00 for the construction of the Milton Arts and Cultural Centre
  • $6,678,425.00 for the expansion of the Milton Sports Centre
  • $982,733.00 for the redevelopment of Nassagaweya Tennis Courts
  • $1,000,000.00 for the John Tonelli Sports Centre Rehabilitation
  • $1,000,000.00 toward the twinning of Burlington’s Appleby Ice Centre
  • $266,666.00 for the Orchard Community Park artificial turf sports field
  • $30,500,000.00 for a new parking facility at the Oakville Go Station
  • $31,200,000.00 funding for Sheridan College
  • $500,000.00 for the North Park Sports fields
  • $5,333,333.00 for the widening of Tremaine road
  • $51,000,000.00 for renewal of the Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • $250,000,000.00 into improvements to Go Transit system that improve the commute

“These investments will create jobs and stimulate the economy. Although we have made great progress, but there is more to be done,” said Lisa Raitt. “Our Government remains focused on helping Canadians and is committed to staying on course to ensure our economic recovery.”
