Lisa was at the Oakville Campus of Sheridan College to announce an additional $20 million to increase student employment in the federal public service over the next two years. Starting this summer, this investment by our government will create new jobs for students across Canada, including here in Ontario. By giving students work experience and the opportunity to learn new skills, it will prepare them for even better jobs tomorrow. Last year, over 23,000 Canadian students were hired by the federal public service. The additional funding means about 2,000 more students can be hired this year, with the majority of these jobs located in the regions. The experience gained through these employment programs provides students with skills and abilities, including those sought by the public service. Since the public service is renewing its workforce and workplace, a key part of renewal is giving potential recruits an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the incomparable range of fascinating and meaningful public service careers. This funding is in addition to the $20 million in our Economic Action Plan for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, which supports youth employment with other public-sector employers, not-for-profit organizations, and small businesses. Together, these initiatives will help young Canadians and provide them with both valuable work experience and earnings to help support their further education.
