Raitt breaks Ground on New Projects

 Arts and Entertainment, Library and Sports Expansion Underway MILTON, ONTARIO. The Town of Milton today celebrated the start of construction on the Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Main Library and the expansion of the Milton Sports Centre. The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Member of Parliament for Halton and Minister of Labour; the Honourable Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion for Ontario; and Gordon Krantz, Mayor of the Town of Milton, were pleased to recognize these important infrastructure projects now underway. “These projects will provide Milton families and residents with sports and cultural facilities to enjoy for years to come,” said Minister Raitt. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is investing in thousands of community projects like these to create jobs now and benefit future generations.” “This is an exciting time for Milton, as we break ground on a number of infrastructure projects that will change the face of our community,” said Mayor Krantz. “Thanks to contributions from our partners at the federal and provincial levels of government, the Town has been able to advance the construction of these facilities so they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors of Milton in the near future.” The combined federal and provincial investment in the two projects is $29,586,690; the total cost for the projects is $44,828,318. The Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Main Library will include a multi-use performing arts theatre, arts centre and new main library. The Milton Sports Centre expansion will add two new ice pads, a double gymnasium, an elevated walking track and a multi-purpose space to meet the growing recreation and leisure needs of the community. Today’s events also recognized the start of construction of two additional recreation infrastructure projects: rehabilitation of the John Tonelli Sports Centre and the redevelopment of the Campbellville Community Centre, home of the Nassagaweya Tennis Club. The Government of Canada's contribution comes from Canada’s Economic Action Plan, which provides approximately $16 billion over two years to modernize a broad range of infrastructure. These investments are helping to create and maintain jobs across Canada for the benefit of all Canadians, and will ensure the country emerges from the economic downturn with a more modern and greener infrastructure. The Province of Ontario's contribution comes from the 2009 provincial budget. Ontario's two-year, $32.5-billon investment will support more than 300,000 jobs and strengthen Ontario's economy. Since 2007, the governments of Canada and Ontario have committed more than $13 billion in funding to more than 6,400 infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs. |
