Raitt commemorates National Child Day in Halton
November 20, 2009
Canada Joins the World in Celebrating the Protection of Child Rights BURLINGTON, ONTARIO. Today, Canada accompanies the international community in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which outlines the basic human rights to which those under the age of 18 are entitled. “We are blessed to live in a country like Canada, where basic human rights are never compromised,” said Lisa Raitt, Member of Parliament for Halton. “We have a duty to look out for those who are not as fortunate as we are especially our youngest and most vulnerable.” National Child Day has been celebrated across Canada since 1993 and, since that time, our Government has remained active in promoting the rights of children in Canada, as well as abroad. “Through initiatives, such as the Universal Child Care Plan, the Child Fitness Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Benefit, our conservative government is reaching out to support children and families,” added Raitt. “I will continue to stand up for families in Halton and ensure that their best interests are taken into account. With the cooperation of provinces and territories, community groups, civil society, and international organizations, the Government is dedicated to the well-being, development, protection, and participation of children and youth. Coinciding with National Child Day, the week of November 15-21 officially recognizes Bullying Awareness. “Bullying is a real problem in our schools and it is our responsibility to recognize these problems at their first signs,” continued Raitt. “I want to thank the persistence of the Halton Regional Police, our educators and other community activists for their ever-present efforts to minimize the act of bullying in schools and throughout the community.” For further information about National Child Day please visit the National Child Day website: www.childday.gc.ca |
